Well, the blog neglect has reached an all time high! 2011 was the busiest year we've ever had, with opening the new studio, dozens of weddings, and over 60 Tucson family portrait sessions between October and December. Once again, the unbelievable scenery and sunsets of Arizona we're spectacular and we made some incredible shots in 2011. We also had the chance to work with some great high school seniors last year. We actually had quite a few from out of town, and one as far as Iowa! Here are a few of our favorites from last year, among the many fun and exciting shoots that we had.

Thank you to all the clients and friends that we booked last year, it was your amazing referrals and word of mouth that contributed to the amazing growth our Tucson photography studio. Here's a few best of 2011 photos we had a great time making!

2011 Best Sunset:
Jeff & Kristina's Engagement Session - this was one of those time that everything just lined up and the sky gave us pure magic. We made it to three different locations to get a nice variety of photos, and ended up timing the sunset just right. I was optmistic it would be a nice sunset, as the key to a great Sunset is a few clouds near the horizon line. This one went crazy and just blew me away.

2011 Most Photogenic:
Victoria has been a serious dancer her whole life and not only is she a very talented dancer, but she also happens to be a real pro in front of a camera. Most of my clients need help posing and it takes a minute or two to get warmed up. Her and her family wanted some new hip and modern photos to enter into a contest. I think she has a good chance of winning!

2011 The Graduate:

Meet Tara, who really knows how to rock the allstars with a U of A Cap and Gown! The Campus was in full bloom and Old main had some great light on it. Tara was a natural and I was so happy to make theses amazing photos for her to show her children some day.

I had a great shoot with long time friend and local musician, Gabe Sullivan. Gabe just finished recording his 2nd album and needed some photos for the cover and inserts. You may remember the cover we did for his first album out on the eastside of Tucson a few years back. That was such a fun photo shoot and Gabe is so talented and full of creative ideas. Needless to say, I was excited to photograph him for his new record.

This time he wanted a more Urban Grunge theme, that really describes Tucson and his roots. We started at the studio with some different lighting ideas and moved to more dramatic lighting on a white background. Gabe rocked the studio like pro and we got a lot of great shots. After the studio photos were complete, we went around downtown Tucson and found some new really cool places to photograph. I'm always looking for great textures and backgrounds and Gabe's attire fit perfectly into the backgrounds we found.

A few weeks ago we posted a sneak peak of our senior session with Carli, a fashion-forward (and photogenic!) senior who came to see us from Chandler, AZ. I had a hard time picking the final edits from her batch of raw proofs...

Probably one of my favorites from the shoot...so hard to choose though! I just love the colors in the graffiti, and the fact is says "magic"...

Had to get a couple shots with the BF in there;)

Switchin' it up from urban setting to desert mountain top...I was so glad when Carli whipped out the cowboy hat and boots!

Stephen & Jessica's e-session was a really neat experience. The couple decided to have an intimate desert ceremony - just the two of them! (Well, along with Shaun and a justice of the peace:)). It was a cloudy, breezy afternoon, but the mountains were beautiful. When the raw images were passed along to me, I thought the inherent muted, natural tone of the images called for me to embrace the earthy colors when editing, and give them a little bit of a vintage feel. This gorgeous couple just moved to Tucson last year from Seattle to work at University Physician Hospital in the nursing field. This is the type of couple that you just want to be friends with as soon as you meet them - totally fun, open and charismatic - made for a really fun shoot. Most of the images here were taken close to our new studio - we can't get enough of the seemingly endless variety of cool urban backdrops at our disposal down there. We are so glad Megan & Alex found us, and we were able to create this imagery with them...

I can't get over how this wall blurred in the background - just love the rich color and texture here...

So right outside our studio there are various metal and white brick walls, and in the afternoon the sun light reflects off of them in such a way that they become giant soft boxes, producing this gorgeous even lighting while we shoot - so awesome.

This falls on the first Sat. of April, which is awesome because it coincides with the Tucson Warehouse Arts District 1st SAT Art Walk. Shaun and I were able check out the art walk the last 1st SAT, and not only did we have a great time, but we were super stoked at the turn-out. It was fabulous to see so many people out and about supporting the various emerging and established artists. We hope that you can join us on this coming 1st SAT. and not only check out our new space, but enjoy some drinks, hors d' oeuvres, music and lots of fine art!

Tucson Photography Studio | SUNSTREET PHOTO - DOOR LOGO VOTE! ● Modern Photographer Tucson

Alright, so we just installed the new door on our fabulous 1200 sqft studio space, located in downtown Tucson in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District (love it!). I am hoping to get our official grand opening announcement posted tonight or tomorrow, as well as a slide show that shows the progression of our impressive renovation! I hope that you are all able to come check out our new space, as well as support all the other local artists that show work in the area during the 1st Saturday Gallery Walk downtown. But - back the studio door...the old door was a solid, dirty white 'bleh' door. We want our new door to be super welcoming, and translate the hip, artsy, yet very professional vibe we want our space to embody from the get-go. So we bought a heavy-duty glass windowed door. We're going to most likely paint the door black, and frost the window, so light can still come through it, but people can't look though the door and see all of our gear when we're not around. I want to order the logo for the door within the next week, so this is where I need your opinion! Do I go with door #1 - company name/logo, or door #2 -the boxed logo w/ our website on it?

Although Shaun and I normally go on all our shoots together, at this particular e-session Shaun was on his own, as I was out of town. I admit I was bummed I wasn't there after checking out the raw proofs, and drooling over the amazing sunset that occurred over A mountain that evening. Could we be so lucky to get a repeat of this killer sunset on their wedding day? Hope so!

So it's no secret that Shaun is a total rockstar when it comes to these sunset silhouette shots...this one could possibly be my favorite one though...pretty sure it is going to earn a spot in our new studio:)

So Shaun and I have super busy trying to keep up with everything photography-wise (and family-wise) with the renovation or our new studio space - which is set to open up in just a few short weeks. (More info on the grand opening reception coming soon!) As such, my resolution for more blogs has gotten off to a rough start this year! I've come to terms with the fact that my fabulous "reminiscing 2010" wedding and e-session blogs I had intended to post are just not going to happen - it's already March, for goodness sakes. But hey, why live in the past? However, many of our awesome weddings and e-sessions from last year will be featured on our newly updated website which was just launched this week! Shaun and I are excited about the new format of the site, it is however, still under construction, so if you happen upon it now, please be sure to drop by again periodically as new galleries and pics are being added daily:)

These pics are from an Tucson Engagement session we had with Sean & Angela - an adorable Ratheon couple, who are getting married this coming fall. We shot in a variety of locations in and around Benson, AZ - Shooting in Benson was something new for us, which was great, as we always dig trying out new locations with our couples. There were quite a few areas we happened upon right off the highway, which resulted some great shots - and quite a bit of variety...

Over the last few years Shaun has grown pretty tight with the crew down at the historic Hotel Congress and Maynard's Market located in downtown Tucson, Arizona. Recently the awesome owners of these establishments, Richard and Shana Oseran, asked Shaun to do a commercial shoot @ Maynard's for a spread in Wine Spectator Magazine. We're looking forward to seeing the spread, in the mean time, here are some of the proofs we provided...

We're also working on some cool photography that will be made into artsy still animations for Hotel Congress's website - currently being revamped by designer and architect Rory McCarthy. The imagery has a really neat grungy-vintage feel about it, and we're anxious to finish the project and see the result - we'll be sure to post about it when the new site is up and running!

Happy New Year! Reminiscing 2010 Part 1: SENIORS!

Alright, so our number one New Year's resolution for 2011 is to be much more on top of our blog! Our blog has been sorely neglected this past year. But contrary to what this space may suggest, SunStreet Photo had its best year yet - 2010 proved be an awesome year for bringing in some super fun seniors, and some amazing couples. Weddings this past year took us across the country, first to Cabo, MX, then back to the mid-west, which was great, because we got to visit some family on the same trip! Furthermore, some great things happened within our family, for example, our 4 year-old daughter started pre-kindergarten, and I (Janet) got a master's degree! (One of the primary reasons our poor blog has suffered). It is exciting to think that I am now legally qualified to step into classrooms and spread awareness and appreciation for the arts - whoo hoo! Well, it would take quite a lot of blogs to catch everyone up on what went down in 2010, so I've decided to create three blogs that show highlights of some our favorite seniors and couples from this past year. The Perfect Holiday Gift: Baby Colin!

So we welcomed a new member into our family the last week of October. Shaun's little sister Mandie, had a healthy ( and big!) baby boy, she named Colin Jacob. We were both finally able to cruise to Las Cruces NM to visit the little guy over Thanksgiving - he was so precious! Mandie wanted some pictures of her little man in some Christmas attire, so we set up a mini studio in her living room, and snagged these adorable pics - perfect for Christmas cards and ornaments! Shaun let me take over this shoot - I have been expressing to him how I would love to photograph more pregnancies and babies. I think the key with babies is utilizing natural light when possible - the lighting in these images is all natural light that was coming in from the large dining room windows in Shaun's sister's home.

Ryan & Kara - {Tubac Weddings}

Ryan And Kara flew out from Michigan this March to have an intimate destination wedding somewhere warm. They chose the beautiful Tubac Golf Resort in Arizona and the weather was perfect! These two had me laughing all day - I really enjoyed spending the day with them. The ceremony overlooked the resort's golf course and gorgeous mountain views. The couple wrote their own vows, and they were quite possibly the best vows I've heard! Here's a sample of a wedding coffee table storybook that Janet created for Ryan and Kara...

Cruise ship love birds Drew & Juoy were looking for a Tucson Wedding Photographer and decided to arrange two intimate ceremonies, so they could best share this important step in their lives with both of their families. We were trully honored to be their choice for their Wedding Photography. The first ceremony was held in Tucson right before Christmas - there were many wonderful moments as Juoy and Drew shared their vows with Juoy's beautiful family...

This super cute couple is getting married this year in Pennsylvania - Courtney was at the last Tucson Wedding expo we were at and looking for an Arizona Wedding Photographer for their engagement pics - Luckly they found us! We were stoked to create some awesome AZ engagement pics for them...

So Joe and Courtney are both super football fans - so we started out at the U of A, taking advantage of some of our fave photo spots, and hoped that we could sneak onto the football field for some truly unique, sporty pics. Well, unfortunately not only was the football field locked up, but all the sprinklers were on! We tried... we're going to have to figure out who to contact so we can successfully crash the field next time!

We just loved that this couple seemed down for anything, so we met them another evening at Texas Canyon, a location we've been wanting to shoot for awhile - it was also a great place to show off some awesome AZ backdrops to all of Joe and Courtney's family and friends back east. Courtney was such a trooper hiking through the rocks with her heels! Check out the results...

Scottsdale Wedding Photography - Craig & Rachel

Craig and Rachel had a beautiful and unique ceremony at a private residence in Scottsdale, AZ. The event was hosted by Rabbi Ayla Grafstein and her husband, who built the grandest chuppah ever in their back yard. It was adorned with palm leaves, lights, and gorgeous fabrics from the middle east. The ceremony itself mixed Jewish wedding tradition with a cool bohemian flair - colorful surroundings and lively drum and guitar music. We felt so lucky to be a part of this vibrant celebration.

So we went a little crazy with the detail shots - so much neat decor to photograph!

Craig and Rachel are awesome parents -they share seven children between the two of the them! We had a great time taking portraits in the park next door...

I thought the ring was really beautiful...

Brad and Christine tied the knot in an intimate evening ceremony at La Posada in Tucson. Check out this gorgeous bride and groom...

One of our favorite parts of shooting wedding is hanging out with the bride and groom before the ceremony and capturing some beautiful shots as they dress and get psyched for their "I do's"...

We always have great time interacting with the kids - Christine's nieces were adorable - and so photogenic!

Just after the ceremony, the full moon peaked out at us and made for an extra special background.

Brad and Christine's outdoor reception was perfect - tables dressed with candles and calla lilies, warm evening breezes, a swingin' live jazz band, and of course, delicious food provided from the chefs of La Posada:)

We loved the table numbers - they were all fun facts about Brad and Christine - what a great idea!

Steve and Christine had a beautiful, intimate evening wedding ceremony at
Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort. It couldn't have been a more gorgeous afternoon and evening, and the lush gardens and courtyards of Hacienda del Sol made our job easy - so many awesome nooks and backdrops on the property for us to take advantage of! Steve and Christine also opted to have a 'first look' session before their guests arrived - it was an extremely relaxed and romantic photo shoot, which resulted in a plethora of stunning pictures for the couple! Here's a look...

A rare behind the scenes look!

The ceremony took place on the interior courtyard of the Hacienda after the sun set - it's always a challenge to take pics in the dark - but we set up a couple light stands on either side of the ceremony, and we think they came out alright...

Tucson Photographer- The Tu Nidito Fashion Show| Westin La Paloma

Wow, it has been a crazy month for Janet and I. Last Saturday, I had the chance to do some volunteer work for the Tu Nidito Fashion Show here in Tucson. If you haven't heard about Tu Nidito, meaning "your little nest" you definitely should. Hear is a blurb from their website about what they do:

The sole mission of Tu Nidito, the Tucson, Arizona 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is to provide individual, family and group support through emotional, educational, social and spiritual services to children and their families as they deal with serious illness and death. - Tunidito.org

My friend Amy Breck with the Tucson Ladies Council invited me to be a part of this amazing local event. Basically the La Paloma Ballroom is decked out like a Hollywood premier, and some of the most generous people in Tucson show up to bid on items donated by local businesses. The money rasied goes to Tu Nidito and they continue to provide amazing support for these families.

As you can see the place was a photographers dream and made for really dynamic lighting and colors. They had the coolest martini bar I've ever seen...

Diane Tucker and Mr. Ahn kicked off the show...

...and then came the kids strutting their Halloween costumes!

The show continued on with a stellar dance performance and fashion runway show...

We were so stoked after Ron and Megan's e-session this past week! Megan just graduated from the U of A, and Ron is soon to follow - so it was only natural to shoot them on campus. Tucson Photographers - Public Enemies: Dillinger at the Hotel Congress

Yesterday was the release of the movie "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp. The movie follows the true story of one of America's most notorious bank robbers, John Dillinger. To celebrate, Hotel Congress put on a re-enactment of some of the history that took place here in Tucson. Hotel Congress annually puts on a larger celebration of their history called "Dillinger Days"

Everyone dressed up in 30's vintage attire and pulled up in their old school cars to kick off the movie premier last night. The weather was a perfect and the vibe of the live music made for an incredibly successful event. Congratulations to the staff at Hotel Congress as a lot people had a great time last night.

The Upright Bass was really nice while the monsoon clouds moved around us with just lite sprinkles.

The story goes that on January, 21 1933 a fire broke out on the third floor of the Hotel. Dillinger and his men we're exposed when they tried to bribe a firefighter to save their loot up in their rooms. They were later arrested on a downtown Tucson street corner.

Stop and have dinner at the Hotel, go see this summer's big movie, and be sure to visit the Hotel Congress website to see what happening downtown!

Awesome cruise-ship couple Drew & Juoy will be getting married this coming January at the beautiful Melia Cabo Real. The resort is right on the coast with beautiful sandy beaches and golden sunsets - we can't wait to go! Thank you Drew and Juoy for allowing us to share in your magnificent destination wedding! We are going to have an amazing time!

Tucson Wedding Photography - Katherine & Chris| Westward Look

This was one of my favorite weddings that I shot this past May. Katherine and Chris tied the knot at Westward Look Resort in Tucson - and to our great advantage, everything was in bloom, which made for gorgeous outdoor pictures. The rooftop deck at the resort has to be one of the best places to hold an event in Tucson - it's just amazing up there. The bride and groom each had a four-year old daughter - they were so adorable, and so excited to become sisters! You could just tell that this was one of those couples that were meant to find each other.

So normally, I focus on details of the bridal gown - but I couldn't help grabbing some cool details of the groom's uniform this time...

Congress Cocktails

Doc over at Hotel Congress ask me to shoot the specialty drinks for the the new menu. These drinks are so tasty and unique, that I was more than willing to help him out. Happy hour starts to fill up every weeknight from 5-7 pm.

The Ghost Orchid, made with a haunting combo of Citron Vodka, Domaine de Canton, ginger root, & a drizzle of prickly pear has grown quite popular. It's a blend of refreshing summer drink with a hint a sweetness. If your looking for something to do and a chill place to hang, I recommend Congress.

To keep up on the what's happing in downtown Tucson, cruise over to the Hotel Congress website. They almost always have the best music scene in town and the best bartenders.

Oregon Vacation

We're on vacation in Oregon this week and this place is just full of beautiful photo opportunities! Here are a few of our photos from the first day in Portland. The weather is a bit colder and damper than Arizona, but who wants 80 degrees everyday;) We arrived at Rockaway Beach on Oregon's northern coast line on Friday. Its quite chilly and windy on the ocean, but the scenery is fantastic. Janet has been up here before, but it's my first time exploring Oregon, and I'm enjoying it! More pics to come...

I had the opportunity to help out a local musician with a photo for his new album coming out soon. Gabe bought an old piano and we dragged it out into the desert for this crazy cool shot. The sky was incredible and Gabe was a blast to hang out with. If you haven't had the chance to see Gabe, you can find him and his band "The Fell City Shouts" playing in local pubs and concert venues in Tucson.

We did this Post-Wedding shoot for our lovely friend Deborah not too long ago - as it happened, we came across this shiny white Harley on top of A Mountain. The owners had no issue with us using it, so we took advantage! The prop was well suited for Deborah's sense of humor and free-spirited nature, and we really dig some of the results!

"Wearin 'O The Green"

This Saturday evening I headed down to Old Town Artisans to photograph some Irish Storytelling, part of the schedule of events preparing for the 22nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade of Tucson. Organized by Todd Hanley and Steve Dunn of The Hotel Congress and the St. Patty's Day Parade Committee, Tucson Irishmen (and women) provided lively music and animated storytelling, while Bev of Old Town Artisans provided the spirits. Jack McDaniel kept me especially entertained with his irresistable Irish accent - he had the crowd rolling with his humorous tales of whiskey and women!

Upcoming events include The 2009 Great Irish Cookoff @ Maynard's Market, followed up by the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival @ Armory Park on March 15th. Check back for more photos from these events courtesy of SunStreet Photo!

Weekend in Havasu

We were able take off for Lake Havasu this past weekend. My grandparents have been snow-birding up there in the same condo for nearly 20 years now, and we make sure we visit up there at least once before they take off back to the midwest. Grandpa had a particularly trying year, and we weren't sure he was going to make it back to Havasu this year, so we were particularly anxious to spend some quality time with him since he decided to make the trip. We love relaxing by the condo pool, and playing cards with all the retirees - we hope to keep up the tradition when we're retired some day! Our daughter Maddy didn't have such a bad time either...she loves hanging out with Great-Grandpa, playing at the playground by the lake, and chasing all the birds that hang out on the lake shore!

The Click - Sedona

We had an awesome time with 'The Click' last Saturday in Sedona, AZ! The weather was gorgeous, and the recent brides and grooms that modeled for us had such a great attitude-they were a blast to work with. We truly enjoyed getting to know some more talented photographers from southern AZ. Props to the Kadie and Joe Pangburn for putting such an awesome event together - we can't wait for the next one!

The Chef

This week, I was asked to shoot a portrait of Chef Travis, the talented new head chef for The Cup Cafe. The Cup, located inside the historic Hotel Congress in downtown Tucson, has been a hidden gem for some time. The restaurant combines a relaxed, artistic atmosphere with elegant alternative- American cuisine.

White Mountain Getaway

My wife Janet and I took a much needed getaway to the White Mountains for my birthday this year. We stayed at an awesome condo-resort in Pinetop that was nestled right in the woods. The weather was gorgeous -just a tad bit chilly compared the Tucson desert! We had a great time just enjoying each-other's company, soaking in the beautiful scenery, and of course, taking some pics!

Grandma

This summer I lost my Grandmother to Alzheimer's. We noticed her struggling with memory-loss about two years ago, but this year her mind seemed to decline rapidly with each passing day. She had to be admitted into a nursing home recently, and sadly, she is now basically just a shell of her beautiful self. She was the most amazing woman I've ever known, and I will miss her terribly. Life really is short, so appreciate and make the most of the time you have today.
